Daman is a city in the western coast of India. It is a small city
and the district headquarter of Daman & Diu Union Territory. It is
one of the oldest and significant ports of the country. The city along
with the parent union territory was the significant part of Portuguese
territories in India. The Portuguese had their reign over the region for
about 400 years. The Portuguese hugely colonized the region and left a
great influence on the lifestyle, culture, and religion. Before them,
the city and the regions around were parts of the Mughal empire. The
Indian Army ceded Daman and the parent union territory from the
Portuguese in 1961. At that time, Daman & Diu and Goa were a part of
single union territory in India. Later in 1987, when Goa became a
separate state, Daman & Diu became one separate union territory and
Daman was declared the political headquarter of the new union territory.
Today, Daman & Diu is the second smallest union territory of India. The whole territory is bordered by the Gujarat state. Daman is near to Vapi in southern Gujarat and Diu is near to Junagarh.
